Machakos Governor Alfred Mutua has declared that Shalom Hospital in Athi River Sub-County will now serve as a Covid-19 quarantine facility following some deaths from the disease.

Governor Mutua took to his Twitter account to notify the local residents of the decision that was made last night after consultations with the Director-General of Health Patrick Amoth and the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council.

The governor said the hospital would not handle any other patients following several deaths of Covid-19 patients and infections in the facility.

Revealing that there were fears of more infections, Mutua said that some other inpatients had also tested positive for Covid-19.

A health worker, he said, was among those infected with the deadly virus and no one is allowed to visit or leave the facility from today, 27th June 2020.

“The process of screening and testing for covid -19 in the facility may take several days and has already started,” he added

He said other decisions would be made after evaluation by the relevant agencies, as investigations were going on.

Citing what happened in places such as New York and some Italian cities, Governor Mutua urged county residents to remain calm as the county government ensures the safety of all county health facilities to prevent hospital-based Covid-19 infections.
