Students at Mombasa College on Strike Over Lack of Essential Facilities

Hundreds of students of the Institute of Certified Studies in Mombasa today, 25th February, staged protests over the lack of essential facilities.

The students were also angered by the sacking of some key subordinate staff by the administration. However, there was no response or comment on the strike from the administration.

“Today, they fired a technician and that sparked off the strike,” a student, Cynthia Murugi, told journalists.

Murugi lamented that some departments lacked basic equipment for practicals, especially in the School of Hospitality.

She also claimed that sometimes even the washrooms are closed, leaving them helpless.

Another student, Mbaruk Mohammed, was troubled by the lack of vital learning materials in the library.

Facilities for practical studies were a big source of concern, especially In beauty studies, which require a lot of practice.

Mohammed accused the communication’s department of turning a deaf ear to their problems.

“We have been told to write down our issues, but they not been addressed by anyone.”
