Suspended Nairobi Governor Mike Mbuvi Sonko has received a major boost in his bid to appoint a deputy governor.
This comes after the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) cleared Ann Kananu Mwenda for appointment as the Nairobi Deputy Governor.
Mwenda was handed the IEBC certificate by the Nairobi County Returning Officer, Dr Joseph Eroo.
Her name will now be forwarded to the Nairobi County Assembly for vetting.
Mwenda is currently the County Chief Officer for disaster management and coordination.
An earlier attempt by a Nairobi resident, Peter Agoro, to block the county assembly from vetting Mwenda was rejected by the High Court. Agoro also failed to have the governor barred from nominating a deputy until he is cleared of a fraud case he is facing in court.
Nairobi County Assembly Speaker Beatrice Elachi had also asked for clearance to take over as the governor following Sonko’s suspension on Ksh357 million procurement fraud allegations.
