President Uhuru Kenyatta has directed that his and Deputy President William Ruto’s salaries be reduced by 80 percent to assist in easing the burden occasioned by the global coronavirus pandemic.

Addressing the nation from State House, Nairobi, on Wednesday, 25th March, President Kenyatta also proposed that the salaries of the Cabinet Secretaries and Chief Administrative Secretaries be reduced by 30 percent and those of Principal Secretaries by 20 percent.

“I call on the other arms of government and tiers to join us in this national endeavour, by making similar voluntary reductions to free-up monies to combat this pandemic,” said President.

The President ordered Kenya Revenue Authority to expedite the payment of all verified VAT refunds amounting to Ksh10 billion within three weeks; or allow for offsetting of withholding VAT, in order to improve the cash flow for businesses.
