Victor Wanyama Wins Maiden Trophy With Montreal Impact

Former Harambee Stars captain and Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Victor Wanyama on Sunday, 21st November captained Major League Soccer side CF Montreal to a 1-0 win over Toronto FC in the Canadian Cup final played at Saputo Stadium.

Romell Quioto’s goal in the 72nd-minute was enough for Wanyama’s side to defend its Canadian Championship (Voyageurs Cup) title.

This is Wanyama’s first title since joining the club from Tottenham Hotspur in March last year.

The win earned the team a berth in the CONCACAF Champions League, $75,000 and bragging rights.

Montreal reached the final after beating HFX Wanderers FC 3-1 and Forge in a marathon 8-7 penalty shootout that saw the goalkeepers decide the match, which finished tied 0-0 after the normal time.

Meanwhile, Toronto beat York United FC 4-0 and Pacific FC 2-1 to reach the final.

The title is Montreal’s 11th having won it in 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2013, 2014, 2019.

The Canadian Championship which is organised by the Canadian Soccer Association is an annual football tournament contested by premier Canadian professional teams.

It is contested by Major League Soccer sides Toronto FC, Vancouver Whitecaps FC, and CF Montreal, eight Canadian Premier League sides, and the champions of League1 Ontario and the Premiere Ligue de soccer du Quebec.
