A sub-county commissioner in Kitui County has warned families living along the banks of the Tiva and Athi rivers that they will be forcefully removed if they do not move to safer grounds.

Ikutha Sub-County Commissioner Jackton Orieny said the government would evict those who have failed to move out, as advised by the Meteorological Department.

Orieny said they would not wait for flood deaths to take action.

“If deaths occur, the government will be blamed. You either move or we will evict you,” he warned.

He claimed that most of the families living near the river banks have pieces of land in other areas, but prefer to farm here.

“We will be going around to see who has not moved. Those who have defied our orders might regret what we will do,” he said.

A number of people have died due to the floods after rivers burst their banks.

The County Chief Executive officer in charge of Water and Irrigation, Kioko Kiilu, has urged parents not to allow their children to get near rivers.
