WhatsApp Tests New Feature to Allow Group Members Leave Quietly

If you leave a WhatsApp group that has gotten increasingly noisy or irrelevant, the app will send out an in-chat notification that anybody can see.

In most cases, it’s probably not a big concern… unless you’re in a group with relatives or friends who would question why you left.

According to WABetaInfo, WhatsApp is working on a new feature that will allow you to depart groups without issuing a notification that everyone can see, which could avert unpleasant confrontations.

When the feature becomes accessible, the app will still notify the group admins that you’re departing, but no one else will know until you tell them.

Back in April, WABetaInfo first mentioned the feature when Meta talked about testing with Communities, which allows people to connect many group conversations “under one umbrella with a structure that works for them.”

The magazine has now obtained a screenshot of WhatsApp beta on the desktop, which shows an exit box that states, “Only you and group admins will be notified that you left the group.” When the feature is available on desktop, it is hoped that it will also be available on mobile.

And don’t forget that you can always stop individual contacts from adding you back or adding you to another group chat with them.

You can specify who can add you to groups under your Account Privacy settings, with the options “Everyone,” “My Contacts,” and “My Contacts except…” the people you omit.
