A nerve-racking video of a school bus being swept away by floodwaters in Mwingi, Kitui County, has stunned social media.
In the amateur video seen by Litkenya.com, the driver was attempting to cross a section of the road that had been flooded after River Enziu broke its banks.
Before taking the risk, some locals could be heard warning the driver against it.
But the admonition fell on deaf ears, as he decided to cross.
He was firmly at the wheel for a few seconds before he lost full control.
The bus started to zigzag and finally, it was submerged and swept downstream.
Women passengers began screaming and crying at the top of their voices.
By the time of publishing this article, only 10 had been rescued while 20 had drowned. Citizen Radio news anchor Joseph Njane reported that the search for the bodies was on.
The passengers were on their way to a wedding.
The locals rushed to the scene but did not dare to get into the water to rescue the victims.
“We told the driver not to take the risk, but he insisted he was a professional and the bus had the power to move through the flooded area,” an eyewitness said.
Kenyans who watched the 2:48-minute clip accused the driver of recklessness and negligence.
Mary Kigwa, a Facebook user wrote: “The driver is squarely at fault. This is an issue of common sense.”
Khalifa Abdi said: “The level of ignorance by the driver is bad. If he survived, he should be locked in jail forever.”
